Godzilla may be the King of the Monsters, but a new threat is aiming to steal the crown - one that the planet's other Titans can't even touch.
Despite being the planet's Alpha Titan, Godzilla is now facing a threat that is challenging his title of King of the Monsters. The monstrous Zoospora is a brand-new threat that is currently causing chaos across the world, with Godzilla unwilling to take on the kaiju, which is well on its way to wiping out humanity.
In Andrew MacLean and Jake Smith's Godzilla: War for Humanity #2, Zoospora's reign of terror continues, as it intercepts Anguirus' migration pattern in Madagascar. After defeating the Titan in a vicious fight, it displays what makes it so deadly - the ability to produce a black ooze which sends other kaiju into a killing frenzy. While the M.O.G.U.E.R.A. mech is dispatched to tackle Zoospora, it's attacked and destroyed by a rabid Anguirus, adding the Titan to a growing list of Zoospora's victims who have become obsessed with attacking humanity in its wake. The scientists studying Zoospora share that as well as this unique power, its behavior is totally different from other kaiju, in that it can't be predicted or tracked - its plant-like physiology allows it to almost cease to exist between attacks, making it impossible to stay ahead of. They say:
Unlike other kaiju, Zoospora has displayed nothing but aggression. ... It doesn't behave much like other kaiju at all. For example, between battles, it sinks back into the Earth, presumably, flattening itself and dispersing its vine-like body underground. For these reasons and more, Zoospora may be the most dangerous kaiju on Earth.
Zoospora Is Surpassing Godzilla as King of the Monsters
Zoospora Is Turning Other Titans Wild
It's always fun to see the Godzilla franchise deal with a new kind of threat, and Zoospora is certainly that. Godzilla: War for Humanity depicts a world where kaiju are understood and even managed by humanity. World governments know their migration paths, their hibernation routines, and how to ensure they steer clear of populated areas. With Godzilla also around to mediate Titan vs Titan territorial disputes, the system is working as well as it could. However, humanity is still behaving carelessly with the natural world, raising the possibility that Zoospora really is here to 'save' the planet by driving the world's other Titans into a frenzy of violence.
