Nicholas Hoult is officially joining the DC Universe as Lex Luthor in Superman: Legacy. James Gunn's DC Universe is getting closer to becoming a reality as he is currently in the pre-production stages for Superman: Legacy, the first proper Chapter 1 movie. With the SAG-AFTRA strike having concluded a few weeks ago, Superman: Legacy is looking to start production in March 2024 in order to meet its July 2025 release date.
Deadline reports that Hoult is now set to appear as Lex Luthor as part of the Superman: Legacy cast, which includes David Corenswet as Superman. Hoult is no stranger to the comic book genre as he portrayed a younger version of Hank McCoy, a.k.a. Beast, in 20th Century Fox's X-Men prequel movies. At the time of this story's publication, neither Gunn nor anyone at DC Studios have commented on Hoult's casting report for Superman: Legacy.

While there are still a few characters left to cast for Superman: Legacy, Hoult landing the role of Lex is the result of a long audition process for him. When Matt Reeves was developing The Batman as a reboot for the Caped Crusader, Hoult was one of the top candidates who were in the running for the major DC role. In the end, though, Hoult lost to Robert Pattinson, who is already set to reprise the Dark Knight in The Batman - Part II.
For Superman: Legacy, Hoult was reported multiple times to be a frontrunner for the titular role alongside Corenswet, while other updates claimed that he was also being eyed for Lex. Once Corenswet was cast as Superman, Bill and Alexander Skarsgård were reportedly also up for Lex, as Hoult's status remained unknown at the time. Hoult is the latest actor to play Lex in live-action, following the recent portrayals of Titus Welliver on Titans and Michael Cudlitz on Superman & Lois, who is set to return as a series regular in the final season of The CW drama.
According to Gunn in previous statements, Jimmy Olsen is another iconic Superman character who will appear in Superman: Legacy.
Given how young this version of Lex will be, it begs the question if DC Studios is setting Hoult up to have an overarching story throughout other projects besides Superman: Legacy. With someone as talented as Hoult, the DC Universe is only getting more exciting. Time will tell what Gunn is doing with Lex in Superman: Legacy, but at least now they finally have the villainous role cast as they get ready for filming in 2024.
