Power Rangers' Upcoming Reboot Is The Final Chance To Bring The Franchise's Strongest Villain To Live-Action
A new Power Rangers reboot geared toward young adults is in development at Netflix, and the upcoming television show should jump on the chance to shine a spotlight on one of the franchise's most intriguing villains (who has never been seen in live-action). The popular superhero saga, based on the Japanese tokusatsu franchise Super Sentai, debuted in 1993 with the Fox series Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, and ever since, numerous shows and movies have been released starring the morphed heroes. The original series spawned one of the biggest entertainment brands, with toys, animated shows, live-action films, and more. Now, Netflix hopes to profit from the bankable franchise with the reboot series.
Over the years, the Power Rangers projects have featured the superheroes facing off against many villains, with some being more powerful and memorable than others. However, one antagonist has yet to appear in a live-action television show or movie, and they would undoubtedly be an enthralling addition to any Power Rangers story. Hopefully, Netflix will take full advantage of the villain by making them a prominent force in the upcoming reboot. But only time will tell who the Big Bad will be in the series.
Power Rangers' Reboot Show Has The Chance To Include Lord Drakkon
If the producers and writers behind the Power Rangers reboot television show want to achieve something that has never been done in the numerous other installments in the media franchise, they will utilize Lord Drakkon as the series' central villain. As some know, Lord Drakkon is an evil (and older) counterpart of Tommy Oliver, the original Green Ranger, from an alternate reality. The antagonist has appeared in numerous Power Rangers comic book series and video games but has never shown up to face off against the superheroes in a live-action film or series.
Sadly, Jason David Frank, the actor best known for his portrayal of Tommy Oliver in the franchise's movies, shows, and video games, will not be able to play Lord Drakkon in the upcoming reboot since he tragically died in 2022. However, the inclusion of the villain (who Frank voiced in the 2019 video game Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid) would be a great way to honor the actor and his iconic character. Additionally, the multiverse element tied to the tyrannical Lord Drakkon could introduce something new to the franchise. Multiverse stories are all the rage these days, after all, and the Power Rangers reboot should take advantage of its popularity by introducing Lord Drakkon
Why Lord Drakkon Hasn't Been In Any Power Rangers Movies Or TV Shows
As mentioned above, Lord Drakkon has yet to appear in any Power Rangers live-action project, which makes him a perfect fit for the upcoming young adult reboot. If the writers behind the series truly want to produce a new take on the popular franchise, they would benefit from utilizing a new antagonist whose origins make him a powerful and intriguing opponent for the morphing superheroes. Lord Drakkon is a relatively new character within this world, having first appeared in the comic book issue Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #4 in 2016. So, those who haven't read the comics or played the video games will (theoretically) meet the antagonist for the first time in the reboot.
Unfortunately, not much is known about the upcoming Power Rangers television series other than that it will be a scripted, young-adult TV show with Jenny Klein and Jonathan Entwistle behind the project. As a result, the heroes, villains, and stories could be anyone or anything. A few years ago, there were reports of a time travel/multiverse Power Rangers project, but that never came to fruition. So, it is possible that those ideas could translate into the confirmed reboot, which will seemingly serve as the franchise's future. If Lord Drakkon isn't in the upcoming show, it's unlikely that fans will ever see the antagonist in a live-action project.
