Constantine 2 has received a positive update from its director. The DC sequel will not be set in James Gunn's DC Universe. Keanu Reeves has been trying to return for another movie as John Constantine for years — Constantine was released in 2005 — and after much work behind the scenes, the actor is back to lead one of DC's new Elseworlds movies, which are those that exist outside the canon of the new DCU.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Constantine 2 director Francis Lawrence shared some good news about the status of the film. According to Lawrence, they are still at the beginning of work on the film due to the Writers Guild of America strike. However, now that the strike is over, Lawrence says the crew is ready to resume work on Constantine 2's story, saying, "We’re probably going to start getting back together after Thanksgiving, and dig back in to try and crack it.” Check out the full quote below:
“The regime at DC changed, and they’ve got their plans. But luckily, we managed to wrangle some control and started working on some ideas for Constantine 2, which we’re really excited about. It’s still the very beginning, as the strike put it on hold for a little bit. So we’re probably going to start getting back together after Thanksgiving, and dig back in to try and crack it.”
Why Constantine 2 Being An Elseworlds Movie Is Good
While it would have been interesting to see Reeves become part of the DCU as Constantine, it is better for both the new DC Universe and Constantine 2 that the movie is an Elseworlds project. This way, the DCU can get its own comic book-accurate version of John Constantine in the future, perhaps starting with a role in the upcoming Swamp Thing before a full-fledged Justice League Dark film. On the other hand, by not being part of the DCU, Constantine 2 has a lot more creative freedom.
Not taking place in the DCU also presents an exciting challenge for the movie, as Gunn raised the bar for Constantine 2. The DC Studios co-CEO has revealed that movies developed under the Elseworlds label will need to be really good to get made, with a quality bar higher than the one used to greenlight DCU projects. Based on that, Lawrence, Reeves, and Constantine 2 scribe Akiva Goldsman will have to come up with a unique tale for the movie to make it to screens, which raises excitement for the long-awaited sequel.
The bigger creative freedom that comes with Constantine 2 being an Elseworlds movie is already manifesting itself. Lawrence recently confirmed that Constantine 2 will be "very rated R." That was the direction intended for the original Constantine, which was made under PG-13 guidelines imposed by Warner Bros., only for the film then to receive an R rating for its tone. Now, with no meddling from DC Studios, Lawrence and the rest of the team can make their vision for what a John Constantine story should be come true in Constantine 2.
