James Gunn Reveals Bigger Role In Upcoming DCU Release

James Gunn has revealed that he is also the director of the Creature Commandos animated series. Gunn was already confirmed to direct the new DC Universe's first movie, 2025's Superman: Legacy, but now he is also going to helm the universe's first project and series. Gunn is also the writer of all episodes of Creature Commandos season 1.

On Threads, Gunn was asked about whom the voice director for Creature Commandos was, answering that he was responsible for directing the series' main cast.

Creature Commandos' cast introduces several obscure characters from the comics to the DCU. The animated series will also bring back a couple of actors from the DCEU as their characters, serving as a link between the two universes. As the DCU's first project, Creature Commandos lays the ground for the future DC movies and shows set in the new universe.

What To Expect From Creature Commandos

Creature Commandos' main cast features exciting actors like David Harbour, Maria Bakalova, Frank Grillo, Sean Gunn — who will play Weasel and G.I. Robot in the series, as well as Maxwell Lord in the DCU — and many more. Among the series' cast are two other actors from the previous DCEU that join the new DCU alongside Gunn. Viola Davis and Steve Agee return as Amanda Waller and John Economos, respectively.

Waller is the one behind the Creature Commandos, with the official announcement for the series claiming that "Amanda Waller creates a black ops team out of monstrous prisoners." Based on that, it is possible that the events of Creature Commandos season 1 will set up Waller's next DCU project. Davis has been confirmed to lead her own Waller series on Max, which will also include characters from Peacemaker, linking all three shows before Peacemaker season 2 comes around.

Gunn previously confirmed that Creature Commandos takes place in the present day of the DCU, which means the characters from the series can interact with David Corenswet's Superman and other heroes in future projects. As an adult animated series, Creature Commandos' tone should be similar to that of Gunn's acclaimed Peacemaker series. Recently, Gunn confirmed that Wonder Woman villain Circe is in Creature Commandos, with The Witcher's Yennefer actress Anya Chalotra in the role. Creature Commandos season 1 will have seven episodes, all written by Gunn.

Creature Commandos is set for a late 2024 release on Max.
