Following the major success of its most recent installment, a new Evil Dead spinoff movie is officially in the works. The Sam Raimi-created horror franchise recently returned to the big screen with Evil Dead Rise, a standalone movie focused on a family in a rundown Los Angeles apartment building who discovered a new copy of the Naturom Demonto, unleashing the Deadite threat on them. Written and directed by Lee Cronin, Rise was a critical and commercial success, becoming the highest-grossing movie in the franchise yet with over $147 million grossed worldwide.
Nearly a year after the last movie hit theaters, Deadline has brought word that Raimi is moving forward with the next installment in the Evil Dead franchise. The project is being described as a "spin-off", with indie horror director Sébastien Vaniček attached to co-write and direct the movie, while Raimi and production partner Robert Tapert are producing via their Ghost House Pictures label. No plot details or production start window were revealed at the time of writing.
The Next Evil Dead Movie Continues The Franchise's Best Trend
Around the time of Rise's release, there were a variety of talks for how the Evil Dead franchise would continue, with Cronin having four different ideas for a follow-up to his installment. Original star and producer Bruce Campbell had also confirmed in December 2023 that there were "a couple more" projects in the franchise that were in various stages of development. One such project has been the Ash vs. Evil Dead animated show revival, though an exact timeframe on its development remains unclear.
Regardless of what comes from the show or Cronin's potential ideas, Vaniček's Evil Dead spinoff is a sign of the franchise continuing one of its best trends by putting rising independent filmmakers at the helm. With the original trilogy proving to be Raimi's initial breakout, his first handing off the reins in the franchise with 2013's Evil Dead established Fede Álvarez as a talent to watch as the rebootquel became a modest critical and commercial hit. He subsequently followed it up with the critically acclaimed Don't Breathe as well as the upcoming Alien: Romulus.
Cronin was similarly a rising figure in horror when he was tapped for Evil Dead Rise, having found acclaim in his 2019 indie debut The Hole in the Ground. Vaniček is fresh off winning multiple festival awards for his spider-based horror movie Vermin, which also served as his feature debut. With Raimi's faith in hiring the French filmmaker for the Evil Dead spinoff, it shows promise that the next installment could very well continue the franchise's critical winning streak.
Across five movies and a three-season TV show, the Evil Dead franchise has yet to land a Rotten score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
