The Gears Of War Movie: Confirmation & Everything We Know

A live-action movie adaptation of the Gears of War video games has been in development for years, and 2023 has seen an influx of Gears of War movie news, teasing the Netflix project may be closer than ever. While it was thought for decades that the so-called "video game movie curse" meant gamers rarely saw a quality adaptation of their favorite games, this has changed drastically. Video game movies are huge audience pleasers and becoming increasingly popular. The Super Mario Bros. Movie made $1.35 billion, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is currently in production, and Sony has wasted no time in the 2020s by adapting Gran Turismo, UnchartedThe Last of Us, and many others.

However, while many PlayStation-exclusive franchises have found their way to the big screen and streaming services, Xbox has been much quieter when it comes to live-action adaptations. Paramount+'s Halo series came and went without much fanfare. Nevertheless, that will change in the future, as one of Xbox's most beloved video game series is in development with the Gears of War movie on Netflix — one of the most highly anticipated game-to-live-action adaptations to be in discussion over the last decade. Gears of War follows a squad of soldiers attempting to end an apocalyptic war against a genocidal subterranean enemy known as the Locust. The series has the potential to be an epic R-rated action flick, and Netflix could deliver exactly that when the Gears of War release date arrives.

Most Recent Gears Of War Movie News

The most recent Gears of War movie news comes from the video game series creator, Cliff Bleszinski, who commented on Zack Snyder's interest in making the movie. Zack Snyder, who directed Man of Steel, Watchmen, and the upcoming Rebel Moon, is no stranger to sci-fi action epics, so Gears of War would be well within his wheelhouse. However, Bleszinski has one condition. The creator commented, "I approve but only if @DaveBautista is Marcus..." Bleszinski is referring to the protagonist, Marcus Fenix, the physically intimidating, trigger-happy, and emotionally deadened badass of the first three Gears of War games.

Thankfully, Bautista seems like he wouldn't need convincing whatsoever. The Guardians of the Galaxy actor is a self-proclaimed fan of the game and even mentioned that he's somewhat been in talks about the project. The project is Bautista's video game movie of choice, commenting, "You know, Gears has always come up, sort of in our sort of circle. So, I was a fan of the game, so, off the top of my head, that one." Given that Snyder has a close working relationship with Netflix, and Bautista and Snyder previously worked together on Army of the Dead, all the pieces are almost already in place.

The Gears Of War Movie Is Confirmed At Netflix

A live-action Gears of War movie is confirmed, as it was announced by Netflix on the streamer's 16th birthday in 2022. Not only is a movie on its way, but a Gears of War animated series is in development too, though it isn't clear if the two projects are set in the same universe. The Gears of War movie confirmation comes as a relief, as it follows years of development hell. New Line Cinema had purchased the movie rights all the way back in 2007 with Len Wiseman (Underworld, Live Free or Die Hard) attached to direct (via CineCon), but it then passed between several studios, none of which could bring the video game to life.

However, there's still a lot of development to get through for the live-action Gears of War, as the movie still hasn't been assigned a director — although Zack Snyder has expressed his interest. Nevertheless, Netflix hired a seasoned and acclaimed screenwriter to pen the script. Jon Spaihts is the Gears of War movie writer, and given his filmography full of well-crafted sci-fi action movies, including Doctor Strange and Dune, he's the perfect choice. There is no Gears of War movie release date, but given that there's still no director attached to the film, it's likely still at least two years away, especially given how much post-production is necessary for the action film.

Gears Of War Movie Cast

Bautista is absolutely the favorite to play Marcus Fenix in the Gears of War cast, as both the creator and Bautista himself want him in the lead role. The actor commented, "It’s a part that I’ve sought after for years and I feel like I could bring a lot of heart to Marcus Fenix. I really would. I think I would do that part justice." Bautista is great at balancing drama and comedy, which is something few other wrestlers-turned-actors with the same physical appearance have nailed down. It's about time that Bautista got his own lead role in a major movie, and Gears of War could be that movie.

Bautista could potentially be joined on screen by his close friend. Terry Crews wants a Gears of War role, and he reportedly spoke with Bautista about the project. Crews noted, "Dave Bautista is a good, good friend and we talked about Gears of War years ago and I said, 'Man, I would love to do this with you,' and he was like, 'I'd love to do this with you.'" Upon learning about the Gears of War movie announcement, Crews put his name out there for Netflix, claiming, "I would take it in a heartbeat."

However, one major star not joining the Gears of War cast is Chris Pratt. Bleszinski once again commented on the potential casting, hilariously tweeting, "Oh and keep Chris Pratt away from the Gears franchise, please, FFS." Some people have turned on Chris Pratt in recent years (both semi-ironically and in earnest for various reasons), and given that he stars in so many different big-budget franchises but still acts the same, audiences might be suffering from Pratt fatigue. Nevertheless, his movies still make billions of dollars, even ones where his role is voice-only. Given that Pratt comes with a huge guaranteed audience, his name is ironically probably high on Netflix's list.

Gears Of War Movie Story

The Gears of War movie story is not confirmed yet, but there are a couple of directions the Netflix release could go in. The live-action Gears of War on Netflix will most likely directly adapt the first game, which is the most straight-forward and safest option. If that's the case, the movie will take place in the future where humankind migrated to a planet called Sera. However, subterranean aliens known as the Locust take issue with the humans' colonization of the planet, rise from Sera's core, and declare war on the humans.

The war goes on for years, and Gears of War jumps into its narrative with Sera in near-ruins. The Gears of War story follows Delta Squad, a group of eccentric fighters led by Marcus Fenix. This approach for the Gears of War movie plot also easily lays the groundwork for Gears of War 2 and 3 too. However, Netflix could decide to write an original story or an amalgam of random stories pulled from different Gears of War games. That was the direction Sony took with Uncharted, and while it led to heaps of criticism from longtime fans of that particular series, it may be a viable option for Netflix and Gears of War..
