After years of speculation on It Follows 2 from viewers it's now officially confirmed that more hyper-tense horror awaits in They Follow. From writer-director David Robert Mitchell, 2014's It Follows established an eerie new horror movie monster with the story of a young woman who, after sleeping with a man on a date, is cursed to be followed by a relentless and deadly force who can appear as anyone but is unseen to everyone but her. The only way to escape is by sexually transmitting the curse. With one of the most inventive horror movie premises in recent memory, many wanted the concept explored further in It Follows 2. Now, thanks to They Follow, it will be.

The original It Follows was a small horror movie made on a budget of less than $2 million. However, the critical acclaim and word of mouth from its unique story pushed it to earn over $20 million. It Follows 2 Gets Official Green Light And Title

The latest news on the It Follows sequel arrived on October 30, 2023, when it was reported that It Follows 2 is at long last entering development(via Deadline). The studio Neon is co-producing the movie, with It Follows director David Robert Mitchell back once again to direct and write the sequel. The official title of They Follow was also revealed, as was the return of Maika Monroe as protagonist Jay Height.

They Follow is confirmed, with production pegged as starting in 2024. Even though it's been a decade since the first movie, there have been several teases around It Follows 2 happening over the years. Tom Quinn, co-president of Radius-TWC, which distributed the movie with Dimension Films, stated in 2015 (via EW) that he was keen to find a way to continue the story. Quinn even suggested an idea for the new story which would find the original hero Jay (Maika Monroe) tracing back to find the original source of It Follows' evil entity. However, it wasn't until 2023 that the project was given the official green light.

Who Is Starring In It Follows 2?

The only confirmed It Follows 2 cast member so far is Maika Monroe, who is returning as Jay in They Follow. Monroe's performance was one of the highlights of the original as she effectively played the haunted yet strong hero of the story. Monroe also expressed (via Comic Book Movie) her desire to work with Mitchell again, saying "I would do anything to be able to work with him again! Whether it's an It Follows sequel or something else, I think he's so insanely talented."

Beyond Monroe, the It Follows 2 cast could include Jay's friends who help her flee and finally fight the entity with Keir Gilchrist as Paul, Lili Sepe as Kelly, and Olivia Luccardi as Yara. Gilchrist is the most likely to return as It Follows ends with Jay and Paul attempting a romantic relationship with an ambiguous suggestion that the entity may still be alive and following them.

What's Going To Happen In The It Follows Sequel?

There are some interesting ideas for It Follows 2 stories and the different directions the plot of They Follow could take. The sequel could adopt a similar approach as the Final Destination movies and follow a new group of characters dealing with the It Follows' creature. However, the most interesting direction to take would be to explore the origins of the entity and Jay's mission to track it to its source and stop it. Jay and Paul slept together at the end of It Follows with Paul then looking for a sex worker to pass the curse on to, hoping that would mean it would never make its way back to them.

The final shot featuring Jay and Paul walking together with a stranger following suggests the plan did not work. It Follows 2 could begin with Paul dead and Jay turning the tables on her hunter by hunting it in return. In a 2015 interview (via Slate), Mitchell is asked about the likelihood of It Follows 2 happening after the original proved a surprise success. Mitchell admitted he was open to the idea and revealed that a sequel to It Follows could allow him to use some of the concepts that were too big for the first movie. He explains that there was "some stuff that we chose to cut out because of the budget and time, so there’s all kinds of fun things that could be done with this concept and story."

The long delay on a sequel is likely due to hesitancy on the part of the filmmaker, and it is not hard to see why. It Follows has a thrilling mythology even with how little it is actually explored, which is one of the key reasons They Follow could be one of the most intriguing upcoming horror sequels currently in development.
