Don't count on seeing Brightburn 2 anytime soon.
Released in 2019, Brightburn is a horror film that imagines a young boy with superhuman abilities using his powers with sinister intentions. James Gunn served as a producer on the film, which was written by brother Brian Gunn and cousin Mark Gunn. Five years later, a fan of the film asked James Gunn on Threads if a Brightburn sequel would happen, given the "so many unanswered questions" that remain. Unfortunately, Gunn's response stated, "No plans at all for this right now."
Notably, Gunn didn't say that Brightburn 2 would never happen, but that it's not on the board at this time. At the least, that would suggest that a potential sequel won't be happening anytime in the near future. In any case, it's a much less enthusiastic response than when Gunn previously teased about the project in the months after its initial release in 2019. At the time, he said he was too busy with The Suicide Squad and The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to focus on Brightburn 2. Of course, now that Gunn's plate is even more full with the DCU, it makes sense why the Brightburn sequel has been pushed aside on his list of priorities.
Brightburn's Star Wanted to Return for a Sequel
"I know there's definitely some buzz about it in the media, but I don't know any more than the average person, but I'd love to be a part of it. I'd love to see where it could be taken, for sure," Brightburn star Jackson Dunn also said of his hopes for a sequel to happen, per Screen Rant, back in 2019. "There's really an endless list of directions the character can be taken. There's so many possibilities. With the way the movie ended... Maybe he'll go out on his own conquest, and encounter what he may and face it, going on an arc as a character outside of his little home in Brightburn, Kansas."
The actor further theorized, "But there's also potential for, maybe, a league. I have my own personal theory that Brandon wasn't the only one to land in a pod that night, and there's others all over the world. I'd really like to see that possibility explored, whether it's in collaboration with Brightburn, or they fight against him, or they all fight among each other, I think there's a lot of ways it can be taken, and I'd love to see that explored, for sure."
Brightburn was directed by David Yarovesky. It starred Jackson Dunn, Elizabeth Banks, David Denman, Matt Jones, and Meredith Hagner. It made nearly $33 million at the box office with a budget of $6-12 million.
