Back to the Future Part II is heading back to theaters. In celebration of the movie's 35th anniversary, Universal has teamed with Fathom Events to bring the beloved sci-fi sequel back to the big screen this October.
Per Collider, the sequel to 1985's Back to the Future will be re-released in theaters on Oct. 19 and 21, 2024, with the latter date falling on Back to the Future Day. Tickets for Back to the Future Part II can be purchased through Fathom Events now or at participating theater box offices. To find a theater near you, visit the Fathom Events website. Back to the Future Part II was first released in theaters back in 1989, where it grossed over $332 million worldwide.
Directed by Robert Zemeckis from a screenplay by Bob Gale, Back to the Future Part II picks up immediately where Back to the Future left off, following Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and his girlfriend Jennifer Parker (Elisabeth Shue) as they travel from 1985 to the year 2015 with Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) to prevent their son, Marty McFly Jr. (also Fox), from sabotaging the McFly family's future. When their arch-nemesis Biff Tannen (Thomas F. Wilson) steals the DeLorean time machine and uses it to alter history for his benefit, Marty and Doc must return to 1955 to restore the timeline.
Back to the Future Part II was shot back to back with Part III, which was released in 1990 and concluded the three-film story of Marty and Doc's time-travel adventures. In the threequel, Marty travels back to 1885 to save a stranded Doc Brown from getting killed by Biff's great-grandfather, Buford "Mad Dog" Tannen. Like the previous two movies, Back to the Future Part III was a commercial success, grossing $244.5 million worldwide.
While franchise creators Zemeckis and Gale have indicated that, so long as they are alive, there will not be a fourth installment in the series, the franchise has continued in other media. An animated series aired on CBS for two seasons in the early 1990s, while Gale has written or co-written several Back to the Future comic books, which were all published by IDW. In 2023, Back to the Future: The Musical — based on the 1985 movie — premiered on Broadway, following its world premiere at the Manchester Opera House in February 2020. As of August 2024, Back to the Future fans can still venture to New York to see the musical on Broadway.
Christopher Lloyd Opens Up About Back to the Future's Legacy
With the Back to the Future trilogy finding new fans on the daily, Lloyd recently reflected on the franchise's remarkable legacy and ever-lasting impact on pop culture. "I’ve done my share of work, and nothing compares to the way Back to the Future is ingrained in people’s minds," he said. "It’s phenomenal. Every day practically — and certainly I go to Comic-Cons — people come up and say, ‘You made my childhood.’ And another reference equal to that, where Back to the Future fills the gap in a lot of lives of young people, who have gone on to become doctors, scientists and what have you. So a lot of gratitude and I feel real good about that. I feel very fortunate to be part of that."
Back to the Future Part II returns to theaters on Oct. 19 and 21, 2024.
