Amazon MGM Studios has confirmed it’s developing a feature adaptation of The Sims gaming franchise around six months after word of the project began to circulate.
Details as to the plot of the feature take are under wraps. As previously reported, Loki‘s Kate Herron will direct from her script written with Briony Redman. LuckyChap and Vertigo Entertainment will produce alongside Electronic Arts’ The Sims team, with Herron and Redman serving as exec producers.
Developed by Maxis and published by Electronic Arts, The Sims allows players to create and control virtual people called “Sims,” who live in a simulated world where they engage in everyday activities such as socializing, working, building homes, and forming relationships. The gameplay is open-ended and sandbox-style, giving players the freedom to shape their Sims’ lives without any set objectives or storylines.
Since its debut in 2000, The Sims has became one of the best-selling video game series of all time, with nearly 200 million copies sold globally. The game’s most recent expansion pack, The Sims 4: Lovestruck, released this past July. Amazon MGM isn’t the first studio to attempt a feature adaptation, as 20th Century Fox snapped up film rights to the game in 2007, though the project never came to fruition.
Best known for directing and exec producing the entire first season of Marvel Studios’ Loki, which received international acclaim and upon release, was the most-watched Marvel Studios Disney+ series to to date, Herron’s other directing credits include Netflix’s Sex Education and most recently The Last of Us for HBO. As a writing team, Herron and Redman wrote the episode “Rogue” for the latest season of Doctor Who, starring Ncuti Gatwa.
For LuckyChap, The Sims continues a partnership with Amazon MGM Studios which has most recently led to the September 13 release of My Old Ass, the acclaimed Sundance title from writer-director Megan Park. Prior to that, the companies collaborated on Saltburn, which became one of Prime Video’s top 10 worldwide film debuts and represented the highest week-over-week growth for any Prime Video film in 2023. Of course, LuckyChap also produced Warner Bros’ Barbie, which received eight Oscar nominations and was last year’s highest grossing film, garnering $1.4 billion at the worldwide box office, subsequently going on to sign a first-look feature film deal with that studio.
Herron and Redman are repped by Casarotto Ramsay & Associates, CAA, and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.
