Andrew Garfield made a surprise appearance in 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home. Following his The Amazing Spider-Man series, the author reprised his role thanks to the permissive multiverse, and now addressed the possibility to return in Tom Holland's Spider-Man 4.
Marvel Studios' Spider-Man trilogy has been a major success. All Spider-Man films were big blockbusters, but the new trilogy grossed almost $4 billion worldwide, with the last entry alone making $1.9 billion worldwide, which was, in part, thanks to the rumors that Garfield and Tobey Maguire might make an appearance. Speaking to IndieWire about a possible return to his superhero role, Garfield shut down the rumors.
A sequel to the successful Spider-Man: No Way Home is currently in development. However, few details have been revealed known about it. After Jon Watts departed the MCU after helming the first three entries, the new Spider-Man needs a new director. Speculation continued that Garfield and Maguire might return to the fourth one, as well.
People who will just say anything to get clicks.
Addressing the speculation surrounding his return, Garfield's answer wasn't optimistic. "I mean, like the internet is a big place," Garfield bluntly replied. "I think there’s a lot of people who will just say anything to get clicks. So you might have been duped, I’m afraid."
Garfield is currently promoting his upcoming film, We Live in Time, in which he co-stars with another MCU alum, Thunderbolts*' Florence Pugh. He recently finished filming Luca Guadagnino's next film, After the Hunt, in which he co-stars with Julia Roberts, Chloë Sevigny, Ayo Edebiri, and Michael Stuhlbarg.
The two-time Oscar-nominated actor has more projects in the works, including Ben Gregor's The Magic Faraway Tree, which also stars Rebecca Ferguson and Nicola Coughlan, and Sebastián Lelio's Voyagers, where he co-stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, but that doesn't mean he couldn't reprise his role as Peter Parker again. Speaking to ScreenRant, the actor seemed more optimistic about his return. He said, "I think it's kind of endless, what can be done with that character. Not that we should; not that we will, but I think you can always find another story to tell."
Could Andrew Garfield Return in Spider-Man 4?
Spider-Man: No Way Home was a massive critical and commercial success. Ahead of the film's premiere, the internet was buzzing with the possibility of Maguire and Garfield joining Holland in his film, uniting all three Spider-Man actors. Maguire starred in the original trilogy between 2002 and 2007, followed by Garfield, who led The Amazing Spider-Man 1 and 2. Fans and critics alike enjoyed the film, and its success, thanks to the original Spider-Man actors, might make Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures reconsider bringing them back
On top of that, Garfield's current answers aren't to be taken at face value. A true poster child for keeping Marvel's secrets, the actor denied several times that he would be in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and it turned out he was. The film also gave his character closure, after being able to save MJ, helping with the guilt of being unable to catch Gwen. Although his arc seems complete, Garfield might return if Marvel comes up with a good reason for him to do it.
