James Gunn Confirms Peacemaker Season 2 Release Window

James Gunn Confirms Peacemaker Season 2 Release Window

The Suicide Squad spin-off Peacemaker Season 1 was a huge success and HBO Max rushed to confirm the series would return with a new season ahead of its season finale. After a long wait after its January 2022 premiere, creator James Gunn confirmed when the series will return.

In a new update on Threads, James Gunn revealed that John Cena's Christopher Smith and the rest of the gang will return with Season 2 in the second part of 2025, sometime "after Superman." The film, which is set to kick off the restart of the DC Universe, will hit theaters in July. Allowing the film to have its own spotlight, it's possible Peacemaker will premiere Season 2 closer to the end of the year.

Peacemaker Season 1 was a big hit, with a Certified Fresh rating of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, and 89% from the audience. HBO Max was thrilled with the series, as well, as each episode drew bigger audiences, and the season finale had a 44% higher viewership than the series premiere, breaking the record for the highest single-day viewership.

Ahead of its Feb. 17, 2022, finale. Max renewed Peacemaker for Season 2, with James Gunn set to write and direct all the new episodes. However, the merger between WarnerMedia and Discovery, Inc. led to a major restructuring as it became Warner Bros. Discovery, and Gunn became co-chair and co-CEO of the new DC Studios alongside Peter Safran. With his new roles and the plan to restart the DCU, Peacemaker Season 2 took a back seat, so Gunn could focus on Superman. He revealed that he would make the series his project his priority after 2025's Superman and that it would be a part of DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.

This year, Gunn further explained that Peacemaker Season 1 is not part of the new DCU. Instead, Season 2 will be officially canon for the restarted universe and will follow the events in Superman. Given his new responsibilities, Gunn is no longer directing all three episodes, sharing the director's chair with Greg Mottola and Peter Sollett.

Production for Peacemaker Season 2 is currently underway, and Gunn recently noted that Christopher Smith aka Peacemaker is "the role John Cena was born to play."

Superman Is the Start of the DCU

Chapter One: Gods and Monsters kicks off this fall with the upcoming animated series Creature Commandos, but the series is only meant to serve as a teaser of what's to come. Instead, Superman will be the true start of the new DCU. The film opens in theaters on July 11, 2025, and will have a brand-new cast led by David Corenswet as Clark Kent/ Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

The DCU will replace the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), which started in 2013 with Henry Cavill's Man of Steel, ending with 2023's Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Some of the new titles will include a Supergirl film, a new Batman movie, but also more comic book adaptations outside Batman and Superman, including The Authority and Swamp Thing.

Creature Commandos premieres via Max on Dec. 5, while Superman opens in theaters on Jul. 11, 2025, with Peacemaker Season 2 to follow sometime in the second half of 2025.
