The dust (sweat?!) has hardly settled on Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers and the acclaimed director is at it again. He has a new thriller in the works called After the Hunt, which reportedly stars Andrew Garfield, Julia Roberts, and Ayo Edebiri.
Per the logline, After the Hunt follows Alma Olsson (Roberts), a college professor who “finds herself at a personal and professional crossroads when a star pupil levels an accusation against one of her colleagues.” That would be stressful in any context, of course, but Guadagnino has a knack for taking minute drama and kicking it up about 100 notches. As Olsson tries to navigate the tense circumstances, “a dark secret from her past threatens to come to light.”
Luca, you have my attention. Apparently, Garfield was also enticed by the concept. In Esquire’s new cover story, the actor explains why he added After the Hunt to his already busy schedule. Last year, Garfield ran into his friend Mark Rylance, the actor and playwright, at a train station. Rylance told him that he’d been working on three films at once and that it was like “being in rep [repertory theater] again.”
Garfield was inspired by the notion. When the opportunity struck, he signed on to After the Hunt, in which he plays Henrick Gibson. In May, Deadline announced Edebiri’s addition to the cast. Details about her and Garfield’s characters are under wraps, sadly—but I hope we’ll see them spar on-screen. Something tells me Edebiri’s comedic chops will be the perfect match for Garfield’s charm.
Not much else is known about Guadagnino’s mysterious project. To be fair, the man has a lot on his plate. He’s currently working on the drama Separate Rooms, which stars Josh O’Connor (whom he previously worked with in Challengers). It’s about an Italian writer mourning her boyfriend, and it’s based on Pier Vittorio Tondelli’s novel of the same name. And before all of that, Guadagnino will debut his much-anticipated Challengers follow-up, Queer, on November 27. That project stars the great Daniel Craig as an expat who develops feelings for a younger man.
Anyway, there’s a lot going on in the Guadagnino cinematic universe. Details on After the Hunt will remain under lock and key for now, but I have a feeling it’ll be worth the wait.
