Carry-On release date, cast, and plot as Netflix's new thriller set to rival huge festive favourite

Netflix is gearing up for the release of 'Carry-On', a film that's already got fans buzzing with excitement, hailing it as the new 'Die Hard'. Back in 2021, Steven Spielberg's Amblin Partners inked a deal with Netflix to produce several films, and 'Carry-On' is set to be the first fruit of this collaboration, penned by T.J. Fixman.

The movie, which had a hefty budget of $47million according to Fastlane, follows the story of Ethan Kopek, a young TSA agent who finds himself coerced by a passenger into smuggling a perilous package through security for a Christmas Day flight. The director at the helm, Jaume Collet-Serra, is no stranger to edge-of-your-seat thrillers.

Speaking to Tudum, he shared his insights: "Contained environments force us to get to know the movie's characters very quickly and personally - we're immediately in the thick of the story with them, which creates a genuine investment in what's happening on-screen."

He added, "It's also a very exciting visual challenge as a filmmaker to come up with creative ways to shoot every inch of a small space and try to make it look different and find new details of the world in each scene."

When is Carry-On out?

'Carry-On' is expected to land on Netflix on December 13, just in time for the festive season. It will be available from midnight for US audiences, while UK fans will need to wait until 8am to catch the premiere.

Director Collet-Serra has high hopes for his latest flick 'Carry-On', aiming for it to be a year-round hit with audiences. He said, "Of course, the holiday travel theme is integral to our story, and we definitely had fun with it in terms of Christmas decorations in the airport and some classic holiday tunes in the soundtrack."
