EXCLUSIVE: The final film in Sony Animation’s Beyond The Spider-Verse trilogy has found its directors as Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson are set to direct the highly-anticipated conclusion to the studio’s Oscar-winning Spider-Verse trilogy, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
“We have had the immense privilege of being part of Miles’ journey from the very beginning, and directing the conclusion to his story is beyond exciting,” said Persichetti and Thompson. “The creativity and care poured into every minute of this project has been truly inspiring. We have crafted what we feel is a very satisfying ending, and we can’t wait for fans to experience it – we’re bringing everything we’ve got!”
Both Persichetti and Thompson have been integral members of the franchise’s creative team from the onset. Persichetti previously served as part of the Oscar-winning directorial team on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and was an executive producer on its much-lauded sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Thompson served as the production designer on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, where he was instrumental in developing the groundbreaking visual style of the franchise. He then went on to join the directorial team on the sequel alongside Joaquim Dos Santos and Kemp Powers.
Returning as producers are Phil Lord, Chris Miller, Amy Pascal and Avi Arad, and Jinko Gotoh joins the team as producer. Aditya Sood and Christina Steinberg are executive producing. Jessica Berri serves as co-producer. Lord and Miller penned the script with David Callaham.
“Bob and Justin’s fingerprints are woven into the DNA of these films, and their passion for Miles’ journey shines through in every frame of his last adventure,” said Lord and Miller. “There is nothing more rewarding than collaborating with creative partners with bold vision and brilliant execution like Bob and Justin. The first two films in Sony Pictures’ Spider-Verse trilogy were massive critical and commercial successes for the studio, grossing a combined $1.07 billion at the global box office. Additionally, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2019, and its widely acclaimed sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, became the highest-grossing animated film for the studio to date.
Persichetti’s additional credits include co-writing the 2016 critically acclaimed animated feature The Little Prince, serving as head of story for DreamWorks Animation’s Puss in Boots, and serving as a story artist on Monsters vs. Aliens and Shrek 2. Persichetti began his career in the film industry at Walt Disney Animation Studios, working on films such as Tarzan, The Emperor’s New Groove and Treasure Planet.
For his work on the award-winning Across the Spider-Verse, Thompson and his fellow directors received the Annie Award from ASIFA-Hollywood for Best Direction – Feature, were honored with Variety’s Creative Impact in Animation Directing Award and were named 2023 Filmmakers of the Year by Consequence of Sound. Thompson has also served as the production designer on Sony Pictures Animation’s Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and its sequel Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2.
