1 of the Best Horror Films of 2024 Gets a Very Disappointing Update

Don't expect a sequel to The Substance. Filmmaker Coralie Fargeat, who wrote and directed the hit 2024 horror movie, recently shared why there will not be a sequel.

Speaking with Variety, Fargeat explained that the whole point of The Substance was for more originality and not just a newer version of something old. "Oh no, oh no," she said with a laugh when asked about the chances of The Substance 2. "Like the point of this movie is to present fresh things to the world. No sequels, no prequels, no number two, number three. So I'm going to be so happy to bring something else fresh to the world in a bit."

The Substance was Fargeat's second directorial effort following her acclaimed 2017 action thriller Revenge, which follows a young woman who, after being raped and left for dead in the desert by three men, recovers and seeks vengeance upon them. In The Substance, Demi Moore stars as Elisabeth Sparkle, a fading celebrity who, after being fired by her producer due to her age, uses a black market drug that creates a much younger version of herself, named Sue (Qualley), with unexpected side effects.

The satirical body horror movie, which also stars Dennis Quaid, was a commercial hit, grossing over $77 million at the box office against a $17.5 million budget. Critics also loved The Substance, with the movie currently sitting at 89 percent fresh on the review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes.

The Substance Nominated for 5 Golden Globe Awards

The Substance received five nominations at the forthcoming 82nd Golden Globe Awards, with Fargeat snagging nods in the Best Director and Best Screenplay categories. The movie will also be competing in the Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy, Best Actress - Musical or Comedy (for Moore), and Best Supporting Actress - Musical or Comedy (for Qualley) categories. The awards ceremony, hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser, is set to air on CBS and Paramount+ on Sunday, Jan. 5.

While Fargeat hasn't announced her next movie yet, both Moore and Qualley have already become attached to follow-up projects. Moore is currently filming the sci-fi adventure comedy I Love Boosters opposite Keke Palmer and LaKeith Stanfield, while Qualley is set to return to the horror genre with A24's Victorian Psycho, which begins filming in March. The movie, which also stars Thomasin Mckenzie, will be directed by Zachary Wigon from a script written by author Virginia Feito, based on her upcoming novel of the same name that is expected to be published in February 2025.

"Set in 1858, the film will follow a young, eccentric governess named Winifred Notty (Qualley) who arrives at the remote gothic manor known as Ensor House. Winifred’s responsibilities include teaching the children table manners and educating them about their family’s history, all whilst hiding her psychopathic tendencies. As Winifred assimilates into life at Ensor House, staff members begin to inexplicably disappear, and the owners of the estate begin to wonder if there is something amiss about their new governess," reads the official logline for Victorian Psycho.
