Well, it’s Thursday, and Los Angeles is engulfed in flames. Fortunately, everyone I know is safe, but many have lost their homes and all of their possessions.
It’s a tragedy.
And yes, plenty of wealthy celebrities call Malibu and Pacific Palisades their homes, but just because they can afford to rebuild doesn’t make their loss any less of a tragedy. I’ve been shocked by some of what I’ve seen on social media — as if these celebrities deserved what happened to them because they were fortunate enough to earn a good living.
Our country is suffering from a complete lack of empathy.
Thankfully, you don’t have to look too far through the smoke to see the good, as social media has also revealed an outpouring of love and support, from the people volunteering at shelters to those opening their own homes and restaurants to the victims and first responders.
Los Angeles is a city built on dreams, and when the last embers burn out, its ever-resilient citizens will dream again, but until then, we are forced to endure this fiery nightmare and watch as our beautiful city burns — the wind carrying its howls of pain.
Thank god for its fighting spirit.
