The wait for The Batman Part II is going to be longer than fans were hoping for, as its latest delay pushes the anticipated sequel back to 2027. While the film will not be in theaters in the very near future, there has been a positive update shared on its progress.
While at the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, The Batman director Matt Reeves shared an update on the sequel while speaking with Deadline on the red carpet. He confirmed that the movie will finally start shooting this year, which is a good sign that the sequel will not suffer any additional delays. The filmmaker did not divulage any specific details about the plot of The Batman Part II, though he did tease that the movie will hopefully surprise fans when they eventually get to see it in 2027.
"I can tell you that we are going to be shooting this year, and that we are excited about it," Reeves said. "I can't really tell you anything about it, except that we are really excited about it... [Fans can be excited] that we are continuing the story, and that, I don't know... I can't tell you that right now, I'm not going to give that away. But, I am really excited to be making it, and to get our cast back together, and get new people involved."
I can tell you that we are going to be shooting this year, and that we are excited about it.
He then cryptically added, "What I am excited about is I feel like we are doing something that absolutely continues where the story came from, but is something that I hope people are going to be really surprised by."
The sequel was officially announced in 2022. Along with Reeves back in the director's chair, the filmmaker is also co-writing the script with Mattson Tomlin. Of course, Robert Pattinson is returning as the Dark Knight, and other stars from the original film expected to return include Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth. It's not yet clear which villains will appear in the movie, though there have been many rumors about the big bad for Batman in the sequel, from Clayface to the Joker.
The Batman Had a Hit Spinoff Series
For what it's worth, fans were able to get a spinoff series to help hold them over with the long wait for the sequel film. Colin Farrell returned as Oz Cobb for The Penguin, HBO's hit series set in the same universe as The Batman. There are rumors that The Penguin will end up getting a second season because it was such a hit in its own way, but a renewal has not been officially announced.
The Batman Part II will be released on Oct. 1, 2027.
