EXCLUSIVE: We have the answer to one of the biggest questions in television, what will Jesse Armstrong do as a followup to his acclaimed HBO drama Succession — and it may come as a surprise. The Emmy-winning Succession creator’s next project is not a series, it is a film.
Armstrong is writing the untitled movie for HBO Films based on an original idea. He is executive producing it with Frank Rich. The duo, both under overall deals at HBO, also executive produced together Succession.
Details are scarce but the film is said to revolve around four friends who meet up during the turmoil of an ongoing international financial crisis.
Armstrong is still writing the script but the movie is being fast-tracked, with cast availabilities being checked for a production start later this year.
The film comes two years after Succession ended its four-season run on HBO as one of the most heralded dramas of the past decade. Its awards haul includes 75 Emmy nominations and 19 wins, including three Outstanding Drama Series trophies.
While he is known for his TV work, Armstrong also has a feature background; he shared an Adapted Screenplay Oscar nomination for the 2009 movie In The Loop with frequent collaborator Armando Iannucci as well as Simon Blackwell and Tony Roche. Armstrong is repped by UTA, 42 and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole.
