18 Years After First Film, I Am Legend 2 Gets Exciting Update From Will Smith

Smith spoke about I Am Legend 2 during a recent appearance on xQc's live stream on Twitch. The Oscar-winning actor was questioned about the reports of I Am Legend 2, and he verified that they are accurate, as the sequel is indeed in the works. He added that he just recently met with Michael B. Jordan to collaborate on the project, revealing that the sequel is being actively worked on. Smith went on to praise Jordan as a collaborator, noting his excitement at getting started on the movie.

"Yeah, that's a real thing," Smith said of the project. "Me and Michael B. Jordan, we sat down for about a week, just went through, you know, character stuff. Akiva Goldsman, is the writer, so, he's putting it together. No, that's a real thing."

Smith added, "I love to work with that dude [Jordan]. He really gets it. I work with a lot of young actors, and young performers, and it's like, there's a difference between actors and movie stars. Actors can come in and do their part well.

I Am Legend was directed by Francis Lawrence and written by the team of Mark Protosevich and Akiva Goldsman. It is based on the original novel of the same name by Richard Matheson which was first published in 1954. Along with Smith in the lead, the movie also starred Alice Braga, Charlie Tahan, Dash Mihok, and Emma Thompson. Smith also gave high praise to his co-star Abbey, who played the German Shepherd in the film, previously sharing how he even wanted to adopt the dog after production.

The Ending Will Be Retconned for I Am Legend 2

When it was announced that a sequel was happening, some fans questioned how Smith could be returning, given his character's fate in the theatrical version of the first movie. However, an alternate ending was made in which his character survives, and the footage was included on the home entertainment release. It has been confirmed that I Am Legend 2 will acknowledged the alternate ending rather than what was seen in the theatrical cut, which pulled the door back open for Smith's return.

"We're sequelizing the alternate cut," Goldsman said in a Collider interview about the film. "The one [...] where Will lives and things didn't go so well for humanity. It's a very different message than the movie we set out to make, but we did it willingly with crass commercialism in mind."

A release date hasn't yet been set for I Am Legend 2.
