“Wicked,” the blockbuster movie musical the earned 10 Academy Award nominations and $727 million at the worldwide box office, will begin streaming March 21 on Peacock. The movie’s singalong version will also be available to stream on the same day along with a collection of bonus content. Directed by Jon M. Chu (“Crazy Rich Asians,” “In the Heights,”), the musical is an adaptation of the beloved Broadway hit that tells the story of what happened before “The Wizard of Oz.”
The film stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda, and both of them picked up Oscar nominations for their performances. The two characters form an unlikely friendship that is soon threatened after they encounter the Wonderful Wizard of Oz (Jeff Goldblum). Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater and Peter Dinklage also star in this story about female friendship, corrupt power and the magic that can be found in people.
“Wicked” features many fan-favorite songs from the Broadway musical, including “Popular,” “Defying Gravity,” “Dancing Through Life” and “The Wizard and I.” The “Wicked” movie makes up the first installment of of a two-part adaptation. The second film, officially titled “Wicked: For Good,” opens in theaters on Nov. 21.
In his positive review for Variety, film critic Peter Debruge said “Wicked” has “found its ideal form, where every frame comes crammed with the kind of detail that could easily have been distracting, had a lesser talent than Cynthia Erivo been asked to carry it.”
In addition to acting nominations for Erivo and Grande, “Wicked” also picked up Oscar noms for best picture, best production design and best costume design.
