Actress Amanda Seyfried might’ve just given us the best news of the year: a third sequel of the iconic jukebox movie-musical and rom-com Mamma Mia! might be on its way.

Finally, some good bloody news in the otherwise dystopian nightmare that is 2025!!

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight on March 6, the actress was asked about the possibility of Mamma Mia! getting a third sequel and seemingly just confirmed that might be coming soon.

“Oh, it’s happening,” Seyfried said.

“It’s going to happen in Greece, hopefully before 2038.”

When asked by the interviewer if Seyfried was in production or had any insight on the film’s future, Seyfried stated she wasn’t.

“You know, ideally [filming] would be in summer 2026. That’s just my schedule. Everybody has to put their lives on hold.”

Is Mamma Mia! 3 really happening?

While Amanda’s chat might not seem like a lot to go off, there is some substantial truth in Mamma Mia! 3’s future through a 2023 Variety article with Judy Craymer.

In the interview, Craymer mentions that Universal Studios “wants to do it” and that ABBA’s recent album Voyage could act as inspiration for the flick.

“I’m sure [the third film] will happen. I’m in the privileged position that I have Universal Studios wanting to do it, who I love working with, and I have a storyline,” said Craymer.

However when asked on what are the biggest challenges in getting the film off the ground, Craymer mentioned that original ABBA members Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson need a “certain amount of convincing” before production can begin.

“I don’t know how much more convincing they’re gonna have because everybody wants another film,” Craymer said.

“But they had ABBA Voyage and then they wanted a rest from ABBA stuff. But it will happen.”

Who will return for Mamma Mia! 3?

Streep and Baranski have also stated that a third movie is on the way, with the latter telling The Hollywood Reporter in 2024 that Craymer had told her about the film’s currently-unknown plot.

“She gave me the narrative plotline of how it’s going to happen,” Baranski said.

“That’s all I can say! But, it’s not like, ‘Oh, I wish it could happen!’ Judy Craymer makes things happen. She made number two happen, and it was a phenomenal hit. I wouldn’t put it past Judy Craymer to get everybody back together.”

Streep also told Deadline in 2024 that she attended a meeting over the third film’s future.

“Of course, I want to do it,” Streep told the news outlet.

“I don’t know how they’re going to do it. They have an idea. I haven’t heard it yet but it’s in [my diary] and I’m going to hear about it pretty soon.”
