EXCLUSIVE: Lionsgate and LuckyChap‘s Monopoly movie is gaining momentum as the studio is cornering the market of one of the town’s hottest writing duos. Sources tell Deadline that Lionsgate has closed a deal for John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein to write a screenplay based on Hasbro’s classic board game.
The project is produced by LuckyChap, the award-winning production company, and Hasbro Entertainment.
Lionsgate extended its development rights to the beloved, multi-generational board game with its purchase of eOne, which was completed in December 2023. Monopoly is the world’s most popular board game brand and is available in more than 100 countries, selling nearly half a billion copies going back to 1935.
“We knew LuckyChap would be a beacon for the best talent in town, and Lionsgate & Hasbro are thrilled that Goldstein & Daley have decided to join the fun,” said Erin Westerman, co-president, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. “We’ve been longtime admirers of their work — telling bold, original, intelligent stories for all audiences. They are the perfect architects for this franchise.”
While they have also become successful directors on the action-comedy front, Daley and Goldstein have earned a reputation in the industry for taking popular IP and giving it a fun, original spin. Most recently they did it for Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which they wrote and directed for Paramount. Next up for the pair is the Apple TV+ and Skydance pic Mayday starring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh, which will bow later this year.
Daley and Goldstein are represented by CAA, Fourth Wall Management, and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush, Kaller, Gellman, Meigs & Fox.
