The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is now preparing to celebrate and announce the winners of the 97th Academy Awards. The 2025 Oscars will be the culmination of one of the most unpredictable and, frankly, chaotic award races in recent years. Quite a few major races are being declared “too close to call” heading into Oscars night. Best Actor is between predicted leader Adrien Brody (The Brutalist) and underdog Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown). Meanwhile, the race for Best Actress is seemingly a free-for-all between Demi Moore (The Substance), Mikey Madison (Anora), and Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here).
For those wondering why Fernanda Torres and I’m Still Here as a whole is being considered a deadly threat heading into the 2025 Oscars, the heated controversy around Netflix’s Emilia Pérez has all but paved the way for success for the Brazilian film in the Best International Feature category. With more Oscar voters giving attention to I’m Still Here, that could be what Torres needs to pull through in Best Actress. Though a win for either Demi Moore or Mikey Madison could still be seen as a somewhat radical move for the Academy given the audacious nature of their respective movies. It’s anyone’s call!
While the controversy around lead actress Karla SofÃa Gascón — who is still expected to attend the Academy Awards in an awkward move — has deflated most of Emilia Pérez‘s Oscar chances thanks to a vast collection of problematic and hateful social media posts, her co-star Zoe Saldaña is still expected to win Best Supporting Actress. This would make it a clean sweep for Saldaña, winning the title in every single major award show precursor this Oscar season. The same goes for Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain), who has respectively swept the Best Supporting Actor category throughout the entire season.
Regarding the grand prize of the night, Best Picture, it seems like Neon has another guaranteed win with Anora taking it home. Sean Baker is also expected to win Best Director, having won the DGA award earlier this month. With the prestigious PGA award under its belt as well, Anora is likely to dominate the 2025 Oscars. However, many are still hoping that A24’s The Brutalist or Focus Features’ Conclave will pull off a last-minute upset in the Best Picture race. Given how unpredictable this year has been and how both movies have formidable industry support in their own right, that wouldn’t be all too surprising.
Will other fan-favorites like Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu, Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two, Jon M. Chu’s Wicked, RaMell Ross’ Nickel Boys, or even Greg Kwedar’s Sing Sing break through with a win or two in other categories? Does the independently produced Latvian animated film Flow swoop in and take the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, defeating DreamWorks’ The Wild Robot? It’s time to find out. Stay tuned as we update the complete 2025 Oscars winners list. You can watch the 97th Academy Awards hosted by Conan O’Brien live on ABC/Hulu!
