Scarlett Johansson Turned Down Studio’s Request to Join Instagram for ‘Jurassic World’ Publicity, Says Black Widow Is Dead but Marvel Fans ‘Don’t Want to Believe It’

Scarlett Johansson is one of the rare Hollywood A-listers to not have a social media footprint on major platforms like X and Instagram, and it doesn’t seem like that’s about to change. Speaking to InStyle magazine for a new cover story, the Oscar nominee revealed that her “Jurassic World Rebirth” studio recently asked her about whether or not she would join Instagram to help promote the summer blockbuster. She’s just not interested.

“I mean, even today, I got an email from Universal [Pictures], and they’re like, ‘Hey, would you consider joining Instagram in tandem with the release of “Jurassic World: Rebirth?”‘ Johansson said. “I get a lot of pressure to join social media. [It does make me think]… is there a way where I could do this and stay true to who I am? It didn’t feel like I could.”

“The work that I put out there is all based in truth. That’s the key ingredient,” she added. “So if I was a person who really enjoyed social media, then I could totally get on the bandwagon. But I’m not. And I think the film will do fine.”

Johansson is headlining “Jurassic World Rebirth” alongside Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey. Universal surely has high hopes for the blockbuster considering each entry in the last “Jurassic World” trilogy crossed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard starred in those films. “Rebirth,” directed by “Godzilla” and “Rogue One” filmmaker Gareth Edwards, is notable as it marks the return of screenwriter David Koepp, who penned the scripts for Steven Spielberg’s “Jurassic Park” (1993) and “The Lost World: Jurassic Park” (1997).

The success of “Rebirth” could also give Johansson yet another mega-franchise win after her tenure as Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Johansson’s superhero was killed off in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame,” and then she went on to headline the prequel movie “Black Widow.” That marked her last MCU appearance, and Johansson told InStyle it will stay that way.

“Natasha is dead. She is dead. She’s dead. Okay? They just don’t want to believe it,” Johansson said of Marvel fans. “They’re like, ‘But she could come back!’ Look, I think the balance of the entire universe is held in her hand. We’re going to have to let her go. She saved the world. Let her have her hero moment.”

“Jurassic World Rebirth” opens in theaters July 2 from Universal Pictures. Head over to InStyle’s website to read Johansson’s latest cover story in its entirety.
