Minecraft might be a bit of a stinker of a movie, but you can't deny its cultural impact has been massive, and it's only been in theaters for a handful of days. Despite all the negative reviews, Minecraft is currently on course to become the highest-grossing video game movie adaptation of all time, with a whopping $301 million on its opening weekend, and it feels like a matter of time before it dethrones Illumination's Mario movie.
Its success wasn't unexpected, and it seems like even Warner Bros. knew it was going to be a smash hit, as a sequel is apparently already being talked about. This is according to Minecraft's very own director Jared Hess, who revealed in an interview with Deadline that "there’s already talk" about a sequel happening.
Minecraft's Director Says A Sequel Is Already Being Discussed
"Well, it would be so much fun," says Hess. "We had so much fun making this movie, and it’s such an expansive world in the game, and there were so many things that we didn’t tap into that we wanted to. I would have a blast doing the sequel, and it seems like there’s already talk about it happening, so I’m super excited."
When asked about what a sequel would entail and which character would drive it forward, he explains that they "teased it in the end credits", which shows Steve going back to the real world to meet a woman called Alex. It sounds as though a potential sequel would focus on the relationship between the two, though let's hope that she doesn't get in the way of the Black/Momoa bromance.
